K-9 units serving in combat have made the news this week when it was announced that the Squids from SEAL Team 6 who killed Osama bin Laden took a dog with them on the mission.
More and more the military is coming to rely upon war dogs in combat and the Marine Corps in particular has a long and storied history with them dating back to World War II and the fight against Japan in the Pacific theater.

I don't know about dogs jumping out of planes and helicopters... but as companions, I have no doubt that they keep men in combat sane.
I know they must be a great comfort to the soldiers.
That's a dog and his boy in a whole new way.
